Kawasaki disease, an acute systemic inflammatory illness that particularly affects the coronary arteries, is the most common cause of acquired heart disease in children in developed nations. Early diagnosis is essential so that effective therapy with IV gamma globulin and aspirin can be initiated swiftly, to relieve symptoms and reduce the likelihood that coronary artery abnormalities will develop.
