With the redefinition of myocardial infarction in 2000, cardiac troponins gained the designation of myocardial biomarkers of choice—although elevations can often be explained by other pathologic cardiovascular processes, or even certain noncardiac conditions. With cardiovascular disease remaining the leading cause of death in the United States, it is important for primary care clinicians to be familiar with the roles various assays can play in evaluating patients for acute coronary syndrome and other urgent conditions.
