Celiac Disease: A Storm of Gluten Intolerance
Lisa Daitch, MSPA, PA-C, Joseph N. Epperson, PA-S
2011;21(4):49-55

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder mediated by the ingestion of gluten in genetically susceptible individuals. Once thought rare, CD is now known to be significantly underdiagnosed, with prevalence having increased fourfold since 1950. In adults, especially older adults, presentation is often atypical, challenging clinicians to consider CD in patients with other autoimmune disorders, a family history of CD, or certain nongastrointestinal manifestations, including anemia, fatigue, osteoporosis, and infertility.
